How to Lower Your LoL Ping: 10 Effective Methods
High ping is one of the most frustrating problems in League of Legends. The good news: in most cases a few tweaks bring real improvement. Here are the most effective methods.
1. Use a Wired (Ethernet) Connection
Wi-Fi is convenient but introduces latency and packet loss. If possible, run an Ethernet cable from your router to your PC. This step alone often cuts ping by 10–30 ms.
2. Close Background Apps
Downloads, cloud backups, video streams and updates eat your bandwidth. Close them before playing.
3. Limit Other Devices
A 4K stream or large download on another device on the same network will spike your ping.
4. Restart Your Router
Routers left on for weeks accumulate issues. A weekly restart refreshes the connection.
5. Pick the Right Server
Play on the region closest to you. Use our regional ping test pages to compare ping across regions.
6. Enable QoS on Your Router
Some routers offer “QoS” (Quality of Service) to prioritize game traffic. Enable it in your router settings.
7. Use a VPN Wisely
A VPN usually increases ping, but if your ISP routes poorly it can occasionally provide a better path. Test it; if it doesn’t help, turn it off.
8. Update Drivers and Windows
Outdated network drivers can add latency.
9. Prefer the 5GHz Band
If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, connect to the 5GHz band instead of 2.4GHz for less interference.
10. Contact Your ISP
If you have persistently high ping and packet loss, the issue may be on the ISP side. Share your test results (especially packet loss) with them.
